How to Turn Setbacks into Strength

What happens when life changes in an instant?

In this powerful episode of Campus Chronicles, Brooke speaks with Naseem Rochette, author of The Unexpected Benefits of Being Run Over. In 2018, Naseem survived being run over by a car three times in a hit-and-run accident. What followed was a journey of survival, reframing, and resilience that changed her life forever.

Together they explore:

  • How breakdowns at university can plant seeds for growth
  • Why resilience is never linear, and what it feels like day to day
  • The mindset shift from victim to survivor
  • The importance of letting people in and celebrating small wins
  • How “Unbreakable Day” reframed trauma into a celebration of survival
  • Three pieces of advice every student needs for navigating setbacks

This episode is not just about surviving. It is about owning your story, embracing vulnerability, and finding strength in unexpected places.

Naseem Rochette, a sales leader at Microsoft, who previously worked at Google, and is now a renowned author and speaker on trauma and transformation. On May 21st, 2018, she was crossing the street towards her husband's car when another car hit her and ran over her three times. The car struck her (and stopped), then sped up, drove over her again, backed up, and then went forward once more and trapped her under the car. Amazingly, she survived and has chosen to use her experience to inspire others.

Naseem turned the anniversary of the accident into a celebration of life – Unbreakable Day – and now shares her transformative journey in her book “The Unexpected Benefits of Being Run Over” and through public speaking with the goal of inspiring people to overcome their trauma and find success in their lives and careers. She’s been seen on CBS, Forbes, and in Vogue, sharing her inspiring story.
